Alcon’s CLEAR CARE Rinse & Go is a saline solution for rinsing and temporary storage of contact lenses when using a hydrogen peroxide solution.

Alcon’s companion product to CLEAR CARE Plus encourages patient compliance.

Hydrogen peroxide disinfection, such as CLEAR CARE Plus from Alcon, is an excellent care system for contact lens patients. It offers no-rub disinfection, lens-matrix-penetrating cleaning and is preservative free. Still, approximately 63% of our H2O2 patients purchase an additional solution to rinse their lenses (even though research has proven that the residual parts per million of H2O2 is well-below epithelial damage levels). In addition, many patients remove their lenses during the day to nap, shower or swim.

Due to the fact that H2O2 takes four to six hours to neutralize, the lenses must be stored in a different solution. However, a multipurpose solution contains the preservatives or surfactants that the practitioner was trying to avoid by prescribing H2O2 in the first place. A non-preserved saline solution, meanwhile, provides no protection from microbial contamination. To solve this dilemma, Alcon developed a new product that makes the perfect companion to any hydrogen peroxide system: CLEAR CARE Rinse & Go.

CLEAR CARE Rinse & Go solution is a sterile, buffered, isotonic, aqueous saline solution containing POLYQUAD (polyquaternium-1) 0.001% preservative, citrate and edetate disodium 0.05%. The solution allows lenses to be stored safely for up to 30 days.

Clear Care Rinse & Go is designed to allow users to rinse or temporarily store lenses for H2O2 users. Some eyecare professionals may also recommend that their patients have a rinsing solution on hand in case they mistakenly drop their lens during insertion and need to rinse it. It’s also beneficial if there is a need to temporarily store lenses until they can be properly cleaned and disinfected.

Because this solution is preserved, it should not be used to fill a scleral gas permeable (GP) lens prior to application. However, as with all saline solutions, it is good for rinsing lens cleaning solutions  from the lens surface.

Comments From the Docs
Previously, when a patient dropped a contact lens upon insertion, they would be challenged to 1) put the soiled lens in anyway or 2) go through the entire cycle of disinfection. CLEAR CARE Rinse & Go is a rinsing agent that also has a little cleaning built in to help alleviate this challenge.

CLEAR CARE Rinse & Go does a wonderful job of removing debris from the lens surface. Particles can be seen floating in the disinfection vial, which is off-putting to many patients and they don’t want to use the old solution to rinse or insert their lenses. Rinse & Go provides a brand compatible solution to rinse the lenses and improve insertion comfort.

The gentle solution helps contact lens wearers who have allergies or sensitivities use a hydrogen peroxide system without worry of the stinging associated with H2O2 cleaning and disinfection. A quick rinse removes any loosened debris and trace amounts of cleaning and disinfection solution. In addition, a recent survey found that most preserved generic and one branded saline solution contains polyaminopropyl biguanide (0.00003%). If your patient has a sensitivity to this preservative, then CLEAR CARE Rinse & Go is a welcome option.
