INDUSTRY REACTS TO CONTACT LENS RULE

On March 7, 2018, optical industry advocates participated in a public workshop in Washington, DC, about proposed changes to the Federal Trade Commission’s Contact Lens Rule. The rule, in place since August 2004, aims to promote competition in the retail sale of contact lenses by facilitating consumers’ ability to comparison shop for contact lenses. It imposes obligations on both eyecare prescribers and contact lens sellers. The FTC also welcomes written comments until April 6, 2018. FOCUSING ON PATIENT SAFETY

In an industry-wide message, Rick Weisbarth, OD, FAAO, vice president professional affairs, U.S. vision care, Alcon, shared the impact the company had on patient safety in 2017 and how that momentum will carry through in 2018. Initiatives include: launching U.S.-specific packaging for AIR OPTIX plus HydraGlyde contact lenses with the same type of patient-focused information included in the U.S.-specific packaging for DAILIES AquaComfort Plus contact lenses; creating additional resources to help ECPs educate patients on the best practices for purchasing and using contact lenses and providing recommendations on how to successfully implement these tools; and continuing to monitor and take legal action against those who are misrepresenting brands or violating the law.
