The one question to ask that will help convince contact lens wearers to try daily disposables.

I have asked many doctors over the years what they would consider to be the perfect contact lens and the answer is always the same: The perfect contact lens is one that feels as if there is no lens in the eye at all.

If I ask the patient the right questions, the result is always the same: they would like to experience new and improved technology that makes this feeling a reality.

My favorite question (which I came up with when I was on the advisory board for Dailies Total 1) is: “Is there anything about your current contact lenses that you wish were different or better?” This question always uncovers a problem of either vision, comfort or over wear of contact lenses. The solution is the same: single use lenses. Here, nine daily disposables that address all three problems.

MyDay is CooperVision’s premium silicone hydrogel 1-day contact lens. It features Smart Silicone, a breakthrough in lens chemistry that brings together everything patients need for a positive 1-day lens experience: softness, comfort, handling and performance, plus the healthy benefits of silicone hydrogel and UV protection. Efficient silicone channels within MyDay’s contact lens structure allow excellent oxygen transmissibility with minimal silicon content. In fact, Smart Silicone chemistry optimizes oxygen permeability in a lens that is just 4.4% silicon. This uniquely low hydrophobic silicon content means more water can be integrated into the chain structure, making the lens genuinely wettable from within””no coatings or surface treatments required.

Also from CooperVision, clariti 1 day is the world’s first and only family of silicone hydrogel 1-day contact lenses””designed with all eyes in mind. Whether a patient is a presbyope, astigmat, myope or hyperope, clariti 1 day provides a lens with high oxygen transmissibility, high water content, low modulus and UV protection. The clariti 1 day provides up to three times the Dk/t of a hydrogel lens, giving practitioners an opportunity to upgrade hydrogel 1-day patients into a silicone hydrogel 1-day lens, without asking them to pay more.

Biotrue ONEday starts and ends the day with more moisture than the leading daily disposables. Utilizing Surface Active Technology, which combines hydrophilic PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) and Poloxamer 407, a Surface Active Macromer, Biotrue ONEday has a unique  dehydration barrier that allows the lens to maintain over 98% of its moisture for up to 16 hours.

From Menicon, 1day Miru’s novel 1mm flat packaging follows the company’s corporate philosophy “to strive to produce innovative and safer contact lenses.” Centraform technology, a proprietary combination of molding and spin casting, produces smooth edges which enhances comfort and reduces the sense of dryness. The HEMA GMA (hioxyfilcon A) material is a time-proven soft lens material that is known for its wettability. The GMA portion of the polymer is structurally similar to oligopolysaccharide, which is the major component of mucin found naturally at the base of the tear layer. It binds naturally with water providing a very wettable lens surface over long periods of lens wear.

The one-day lenses from Alcon have Blink-Activated Moisture technology. Blinking releases PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) from the lens, helping to support a stable tear film and providing lasting comfort and clear vision throughout the day. In addition to the PVA composition of DAILIES AquaComfort Plus contact lenses, two other compounds, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and polyethylene glycol, have been added to the saline solution to help promote enhanced comfort. The DAILIES family of contact lenses is manufactured with LightStream lens technology, which allows polymerization of the lens with no chemical byproduct-extraction step (which is needed in other lens manufacturing processes).

These contact lenses, also from Alcon, utilize Water Gradient Technology, provideing an increase in water content from the core to the surface of 33% to over 80% respectively. The lens has a core made of silicone hydrogel with a low water content resulting in high breathability and a modulus allowing for easy handling. The surface is a unique ultrasoft hydrophilic polymer that mimics the water content of the cornea and reduces friction.

ACUVUE OASYS 1-Day Brand contact lenses with HydraLuxe Technology from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care uses a tear-infused design to deliver comfort and clear vision all day. Its tear-like molecules mimic mucins to help support a stable tear film and reduce symptoms of tired eyes and dryness. The daily disposable lens offers enlarged optics, optimized packaging solution, increased 14.3mm lens diameter, an enhanced moisture network, and maintains Class 1 UV blocking.

The 1-DAY ACUVUE MOIST family of products from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care has Dual Action Technology to keep moisture in and irritation out. It is best for patients with sensitive eyes. LACREON Technology locks in a wetting agent for a long-lasting cushion of moisture. Etafilcon A uniquely attracts and retains lysozyme in its natural state, maintaining low levels of inflammatory biomarkers. (Information based on in vitro data; clinical studies have not been done directly linking differences in lysozyme profile with specific clinical benefits.) The lenses’ low modulus and INFINITY EDGE Design help minimize mechanical irritation. And now, the addition of the brand-new 1-DAY ACUVUE MOIST Brand MULTIFOCAL lens offers continuity of care across a wider range of patients.

Designed to help maintain the natural state of the eye, this daily disposable contact lens from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care is made with a silicone hydrogel material that has the highest volume of wetting agent in the HYDRACLEAR Technology family. HYDRACLEAR 1 Technology uses an eye-inspired design to keep patients’ eyes in their natural state all day and over time. It features embedded PVP that mimics the mucin on both the cornea and eyelid helping minimize lens interaction.

I determined several years ago that I would never fit a lens because of price.  If I am truly in the business of changing peoples’ lives I will do the research and give patients a chance to experience new technology and make the best decisions for themselves.
