Dry eye patients can benefit from Nordic Naturals’ ProOmega for increased omega-3 benefits.
Offered exclusively to professional offices, Nordic Naturals’ ProOmega contains one of the highest concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids on the market, offering double strength EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in fewer soft gels.
Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil help maintain healthy structure and function of the ocular tissue by supporting the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response, maintaining tear production, and protecting eyes from oxidative damage. The most beneficial omega-3s are EPA and DHA. Fish is the best food source of EPA and DHA, but due to concerns about environmental toxins, a fish oil supplement is considered a safe and concentrated option.
Omega-3 fatty acids are also a vital component of the retina, as researchers have theorized that EPA and DHA may serve as protective agents because of the effect on gene expression, retinal cell differentiation, and survival. DHA may affect photoreceptor function by altering membrane permeability, fluidity, thickness, and even rhodopsin regeneration. It is the major structural lipid of retinal photoreceptor outer segments.
The essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA, are now being studied in the second phase of the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS2) based on collected information from the first study, AREDS1, and other research. In addition, an Ohio State University study showed that the use of fish oil supplements caused a statistically significant improvement in dry eye symptoms.

In my offices, we have prescribed ProOmega product for dry eye syndrome (DES) and overall eye health benefits with great success. Once our doctors have established a diagnosis of DES, they prescribe four gel caps of ProOmega daily. This dose will give the patient 1300mg of EPA and 900mg of DHA. In many patients, this therapy is all they need to respond with symptomatic relief. In others, it establishes a baseline to add tear substitutes and other DES therapies such as punctual plugs and medications.
Overwhelmingly our patients report a significant reduction in dry eye symptoms in as little as one month with ProOmega. A simple questionnaire can help the doctor evaluate a patient’s dry eyes for meibomian stasis and tear-break up time.
The number one complaint from patients who have tried fish oil in the past is fish burp, which is the result of rancid oxidized oils. Surpassing inter-national pharmaceutical stand-ards, according to the company, Nordic Naturals uses a patented oxygen-free process and the natural triglyceride form of fish oil to eliminate this bothersome repeat.
Not only does ProOmega help your dry eye sufferers thanks to its high quality and high potency, it is also capable of creating additional opportunities for revenue in your practice as well.
